Zaha Hadid was selected to exhibit her ideas at the influential ‘Deconstructivist Architecture’ exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. This collective display was conceived as an overview, highlighting the work of a new generation of architects. Hadid’s work received critical acclaim from academics, but initially, most visitors to the exhibition found the unfamiliar shapes and forms on show, difficult to understand and relate to.

Unusually, Hadid used the Fine Art medium of painting to portray her ideas and to raise awareness of how she envisaged the juxtaposition of space and form in her buildings. Hadid believed that conventional architectural drawings alone were inadequate in conveying her intentions. She wanted to fully communicate her objectives to construct revolutionary new designs. These incorporated complex multifaceted forms, and lyrical fluid spaces.
Multifaceted forms by Zaha Hadid
The response of the public was perhaps indicative of the struggle that Hadid had in establishing herself as a serious architect. Although the genius of her creativity and the originality of her designs were evident from the exhibited images, Hadid’s opponents questioned the viability of converting her ideas into reality. Initially, potential clients were ‘put off’ by perceived constructional problems and the possibility of incurring ‘sky high’ expenses. Gradually, after energetic promotional activities, Hadid’s company started to secure important commissions and confidence in the viability of her work was established.
Zaha Hadid work
The outcome of Zaha Hadid’s long battle to secure a reputation as a leading architect and designer is a massive collection of phenomenally exciting projects that extraordinarily only reached a conceptual phase. Shown here are a selection of works that were exhibited at the ‘Deconstructavist’ exhibition in New York, as well a number of stunning computer generated images that Hadid presented in response to various clients’ design briefs. The power of Zaha Hadid’s imagery is expressed in a tantalising and evocative manner that invites us into the depths of her psyche.
Zaha Hadid unusual shapes design
She is a free thinker who is unrestrained by convention, the models she presents are frustratingly beautiful, provocative because they would be even more overwhelming in actuality. She articulates the formal elements of her work in the way a conductor directs an orchestra. There is a sense of gravity defying motion and even a suggestion of music in her work. Happily, Hadid’s exceptional talents have since been recognized and her original and innovative designs are becoming a reality all over the globe.
