‘Maritimo House’ in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil is by Seferin-Arquitectura.
The union of contemporary brick and glass architecture defines the unique character of ‘Martimo House’ located in the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil. Against the stunning natural setting which overlooks the lagoon, this house makes a powerful design statement. The contrasting elements that characterize this coastal home are worth exploring.
Contemporary brick and glass architecture creates a house of two characters
The outer construction of ‘Martimo House’ is simple but bold, composed of two contrasting volumes. One with an emphasis on solidity is built from brick and the other focuses on glass and transparency. The transparent lower level supports the denser upper storey. So, contemporary brick and glass architecture has been used to create a house with two different personalities. One facet is private and concealing and the other overt and revealing. The house has been built to take advantage of the stunning location overlooking the lagoon. The architects have installed vast expanses of glass in all walls facing the water. In addition, the concrete roof of the lower living area doubles as a fabulous sun terrace, its raised position is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the outstanding scenery.
Below the roof terrace, the transparent living zone houses a fully integrated open plan space. This is where the airy living room, dining area and the luxury cooking area are fused into one large volume. Glass sliding doors open fully onto a raised balcony deck so interior and exterior areas may be fully united. To further blur the boundaries between exterior and interior, the terrace shares a substantial brick fireplace with the living room. On the second floor, three luxurious bedroom suites are connected by a corridor that opens on to the terrace overlooking the lagoon. The master suite is in a cantilevered space that projects forward providing convenient space for the sheltered car port. A large window with view over the area of preservation of the condominium is the focal point of this suite.
Bright colors complement contemporary brick and glass architecture
On the interior this lively home has been personalized using brightly colored and hand decorated fabrics, artifacts and tiles. These contrast and soften the appearance of the main structural materials which have been left exposed, creating a unique design statement. The aesthetic appeal of additional materials such as: concrete, metal and wood, fuse with the contemporary brick and glass architecture to create a lively ambience within the home.
