Contemporary wood sculpture designed by Vivian Chiu
Vivian Chiu is a designer who recently graduated from the Furniture Design department in the Rhode Island School of Design. She was born in Los Angelis and grew up in Hong Kong which makes her accustomed to the restless urban landscape.
Amidst all that big city rush she learns to appreciate organic materials and simple shape that become the main features of her contemporary wood sculpture design.
Designer Vivian Chiu believes in hard work and when she works she tends to push herself to the limit in the sake of good quality design. Her work combines sculpture and function into single pieces of art mostly made from wood. One of her latest designs created in 2012 is called Jaws. It is a contemporary wood sculpture made from separate tapered pieces of Red Oak. The pieces are long-grain glued, grinded and shaped. The result of the wood treatment is an organic strip that has its one side textured and the other one smooth. The smooth surface has a seamless grain created by lining up the grain. The mixture of two different surfaces balances the design – the ragged surface implying liveliness and the smooth one calming it. The design piece has an interesting abstract look that doesn’t have a defined function.
It is simply a contemporary wood sculpture design which can be used for decoration. It makes a good center piece for any living area that provides enough space. The piece measurements are 42″ x 16″ x 20″(106,7cm x 40,6cm x 50,8cm) yet its form makes it look a lot less volumetric and lighter. The smooth irregular curves of this contemporary wood sculpture provide a different view from every side which makes it an exciting addition to a modern building design. One can put the piece in a minimalistic living room, family room, lounge area or even in the office. The warm wooden color and surface will help the place feel connected to nature and bring liveliness to it. Vivian Chiu’s Jaws is definitely an outstanding piece of contemporary wood sculpture.
