Choosing floor and wall coverings for the children’s bedroom

The children’s room should have good light conditions, it needs to be spacious, warm during the winter and easy to maintain in a good condition. The floor and wall coverings in it play an essential role in achieving this. The colour scheme can range through various nuances. However, light tones are most suitable, since they help in making the room more spacious and pleasant. A parquet covering keeps the floor warm and looks beautiful, but it is also hard to maintain. Laminated parquet is easier for maintenance.

Terracotta and granite are beautiful and easy to clean materials, but they are cold during the winter months, and are thus inappropriate for a small child’s bedroom. Apart from floor covering materials, there should be a cloth covering, since keeping the temperature even during both the summer and winter is of great necessity. Whether it carpets or rugs, they will brighten up the atmosphere and make spending time in it more pleasant. A fitted carpet is another option, since it covers up the entire surface, but it needs a lot of maintenance procedures on a regular basis.

An option, suitable for both the floor and walls, is cork, it not only keeps the floor warm during the winter and cool during the summer, but also isolates the place from outside noises. It also helps prevent moisture, if the walls in the room are on the corner of the building and directly exposed to the outer climatic conditions. Wallpapers are the best choice of wall coverings. They are easy to renew, which can be necessary as the child grows and becomes fund of different patterns. Wallpapers in a small child’s bedroom should represent the world of fairy-tales, of the flowers and animals, which the child becomes familiar with.

On a later stage, they can be replaced by latex paint in the appropriate colour, according to the student’s preferences. Pastel tones and light nuances are most suitable. Fine colour lines on the walls would make the room appear taller. The ceiling in a small child’s bedroom can represent a part of the child’s a favourite fairy tale, or resemble the night sky. That way the child could give way to his imagination and artistic notion from an early age. A teenager would go for a modern solution, such as a hung ceiling. This would give his room a modern appearance. The child should take part in choosing the design elements in his room, as it is very important that he likes how his room looks.
