What would you do if you are an architect who wants to build a house on an irregular hill offering great views? If you are good enough then you would find a solution. Even if the irregularly shaped lot is situated on an uneven, downhill slope. Los Angeles-based architect Johnston Marklee has designed a 3,300-sq.-ft. slope house that features modern interiors under conditions generated by modern problems of building on the hillside. The minimalist architecture house design provocatively continues the Case Study House tradition of experimentation and reinvention of Los Angeles lifestyles. The incredible Hill House optimizes a compact dwelling space by maximizing the experience of the surrounding views, ventilation and light. Its goal is to preserve the profile of the natural hillside terrain by limiting building heights, location and massing.

It is an irregularly-shaped hill house located on an uneven downhill slope features a contemporary silhouette with a minimalist white façade. The façade is punctuated by lots of windows which maximizes the experience of the surrounding views – lush and leafy background of Pacific Palisades, California. Making use of natural light is a great privilege of this great minimalist architecture house design perched on a hillside as sun is allowed to soak through the home. The picture windows face the horizon, and the open-concept plan maximizes the beautiful views, from Rustic and Sullivan Canyons to Santa Monica Bay. The dynamic living experience is directly engaged with the local site conditions due to its minimalist interiors notable for the lack of walls, and the result is an awesome open interior that promotes socialization.
The Garage – Minimalist architecture house design
The main living area is overlooked by an upper loft, with a library offering privacy. In order to express the continuity of the building skin and minimize the conventional distinctions between roof and wall planes, an elastomeric exterior coating material was used requiring no control joints. Johnston Marklee made a sculptural and efficient design solution, engaged with the surrounding site.
