Somers Courtyard House by Rowan Opat Architects

This provincial modern home is situated among the wilderness of Victoria, Australia.

Considering the owners’ wishes the architects at Rowan Opat Architects decide to make this house a single-floor expanding family home that has enough room for frequently visiting guests. The result is a low-rise building combining modern and country house elements and strongly connected to the outdoors.

Outdoor space: The 316 m² area of the house is designed as a composition of continuously flowing indoor and outdoor spaces that are arranged around a rectangular courtyard in the middle. The main concept is to create a permanent connection between the interior and outdoor areas. The building is positioned among existing trees in order to minimize felling. It is surrounded by a partly rocky landscape, grass and other vegetation.

Building structure: Taking the clients preferences in mind the architects design the backbone of the building imitating a tent construction made solid. The house has several entrance points that keep it open and connected to every side of the plot. The main living area consists of a single open plan room that includes a kitchen, dining area and living area with a fireplace.

It opens to the front deck of the house through the highly glazed with tall narrow windows wood-covered facade. The living area is connected to a shared bathroom and two bedrooms via a spacious hallway that also leads outside. The master bedroom and bath are placed perpendicularly the common area and open to another outdoor space.

Interior: The interior of this Australian home represents a combination of traditional and modern style. The living area looks inviting with its smooth timber boarding, wooden furniture and small colorful accents. Some paintings hung on the walls, patterned rugs and flower decoration add more charm to the place and create the atmosphere of a proper countryside home.
