Lake Cabin Design by Nils Finne

This inviting cabin style design by architect Nils Finne offers a sweet escape from downtown.

Set near Lake Superior at Eagle Harbor, Seattle among tall forest trees and fresh air the modern home represents an open to nature personal refuge. Its 306 m² area shelters two bedrooms and an open plan living area that reveals the beautiful view to the lake.

Outdoor space: The beautiful natural surroundings create a perfect atmosphere for a building that has its indoor spaces exposed to as much daylight as possible while sucking in the rich landscape around. The house lacks a big yard or gardening area. Interior spaces and the coziness of being indoors are on focus here. There is a single wooden deck placed in front the building as an entrance way.

Building structure: The structure cantilevers over the water and looks as though it is a natural part of the scenery. The single floor built from timber material makes the construction really light and brings nature in. The facade is open to the lake through a 12-meter high glazed wall.

The glass has an interesting pattern outlined by wooden frames, it enclosed the spacious dining and living areas and the kitchen that are all combined into a single open plan type space. The children bedroom is also situated on the first level and above it is the master bedroom reachable directly through a stairway. An interesting part of the exterior design is the massive chimney covered in stone tiling, it brings more cottage style to the building without taking from the modern taste.

Interior: The interior spaces combine natural materials and minimal furniture. Wood prevails throughout the house and dominates in the design. The wooden beams on the ceiling are visible in favor of the classical cottage look. They harmonize with the wooden window casing and the internal parts of the walls and stairs, all covered in timber boarding. The kitchen cabinets are also wooden with an interesting vertical pattern outlined by darker brown frames. The fireplace amid the living area distinguishes with its stone tiling.
