Modern Architecture – House Bierings

Standing out in a rural setting in Utrecht, Netherlands, this  wood home design features fascinating look perched in this countryside landscape.

Called the House Bierings, its most unique shape is designed by Netherlands Architects Rocha Tombal. Clad in timber and wood, it has differently shaped windows of varying shapes and sizes, which dot the unconventional home’s exterior. Leading through the entrance hall there is a deep porch that takes you to an expensive glass window overlooking the garden, thus adding another element of nature into this contemporary style house. Each window obscure views of neighbouring buildings and frame views of the surrounding countryside. Thus sculptural ‘eyes’ emerge with views to the varied countryside landscape marking the exterior with a special character look. But this interesting house is not unusual only from the outside.

At the ground floor the angled ceiling with different shaped openings (skylights) provide natural light to the living areas and kitchen, which the architect describes as “fingers of light.” In the same time visual contact with the adjacent houses is avoided due to the form and orientation of the building, as the angled kitchen’s ceiling accentuates the intensive contact with the garden. The kitchen is the heart of House Bierings with its huge glass wall facing the garden.  You arrive at the kitchen after you pass through the hall, a section of the ground floor volume, the entrance area and the gigantic pivoted door.

The stairs cut a wooden wall inviting to follow the route towards the first floor while the angled form and extreme proportions (small and high) and the daylight flooding from the ceiling, give the impression of wakling in a medieval street. The living room is a quiet, north-lighted attic space with a big opening exposing the surrounding views like in a framed painting, while minimalist interiors highlight the home’s tall ceilings and cool architectural features.
