This house designed by the architects in Coates Design is located in Bainbridge Island, Washington State. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Both Puget Sound and the Seattle skyline are visible from here. The designers use all the advantages of the location and a lot of talent to turn this house into an elegant modern home that is also energy efficient.
Ellis Residence is actually the first home outside the city of Seattle to be certified as a Platinum home by LEED. It conserves 70% more energy than a home with an average construction. This remarkable achievement is possible thanks to a number of different sustainable practices.
The building has a photovoltaic system mounted on the roof, a solar system for hot water, triple-glazed windows, a vegetated roof and other heat-recovery technologies to make it save so much energy.
A lot of attention is given to the whole image of the plot. We can see how the outside space is turned into a diverse natural environment with a lot of trees, green plants, paths and sitting areas. The outdoor area is also nature friendly because of the permeable paving throughout the whole yard.
The house consists of two separate buildings. The smaller one shelters the garage, carport, storage, wine room and workbench on the ground floor and a kitchen, recreation room, bathroom and another storage upstairs. The other building on the plot is the house itself built on two levels.
Dining and living room
The first level has two spaces: an open plan space combining kitchen, dining room, living room and library and a large bedroom with bath. The upper floor has another library and bedroom. The interior design of the house relies on timber and mild warm tones that are beautifully illuminated by the daylight. The atmosphere inside remain calm and in harmony with the surrounding vegetation. It is just the look this modern and sustainable home needs.
