The project called “Hillside House” received certification as the first LEED for Homes Platinum custom home in Marin County. Hillside House received its LEED badge due to the use of reclaimed and consciously-produced materials. Surrounded by gorgeous natural vistas that are framed by its windows and glass walls, this beautiful luxury cedar siding home is an example of minimal-environmental-impact approach to design and construction. This “high design with high sustainability” home features western red cedar siding, sustainable stone veneers, reclaimed timber and recycled metal roofing. An interesting fact is that the western red cedar is British Columbia’s official tree as its name plicata comes from a Greek word meaning “folded in plaits,” which is a reference to the arrangement of the leaves. Sometimes it is also called arbor-vitae, Latin for “tree of life.”

The four-story home is cladded with beautiful, sustainable siding and is situated on a steep hillside site. It provides a vertical design with living and private zones separated on multiple floors. There are numerous outdoor and covered terraces and balconies that face views of the bay and San Francisco’s skyline beyond. Except the Western Red Cedar siding other green aspects include Energy Star-Rated Whirlpool appliances, zero-VOC paint, low-flow plumbing fixtures, high-recycled content interior concrete, sustainably harvested floors and cabinetry, reclaimed timber and recycled metal roofing. Every part of this LEED Platinum home has been designed to maximize its sustainability, in response to the site, trees and views.
