The ‘Altamira Residence’ By Marmol Radziner, California
The ‘Altimira Residence’ is an exciting contemporary coastal home. It is a place where dreams have come true and many more dreams may be lived.
The fabulous architecture is the response to one family’s desire to build something special in a place that has great meaning to them. The area of Palos Verdes in California is largely unspoiled and retains a certain natural wildness. While this house is outstanding in its architectural beauty, it also sits in harmony with its immediate surroundings. The family which owns the ‘Altimira Residence’ has been visiting this part of the coast for generations. This new home therefore, was to encapsulate and reflect the source of much happiness and very fond memories.
The architect Marmol Radziner fully respected the desires of his clients and produced designs that structured this contemporary coastal home to fuse with the rugged coastal landscape. The house is composed of multi-level forms and terraces that in combination are distinctly sculptural in appeal. The asymmetric staggered composition merges comfortably into the natural slope of the site. In addition, this breathtaking property is constructed from materials that are local to the area. The pale stonework appears as an organized version of the rocks that may be found in the natural landscape. The color is light and fresh and looks uplifting against the bright blue of the ocean and the sky. The crisp geometry of the house is echoed in that of the pool area and landscaped garden. Importance is place on the balance between solid elements and open spaces. The open areas are as formally active as the solid masses. This exciting juxtaposition also indicates the essential fusion between interior and exterior areas.
The semi buried aspect of this contemporary coastal home was advantageous both in complementing the topography of the coastal environment and also not blocking the neighbors’ valuable view of the ocean.
Inside the house opens up to reveal spacious and stylish living areas. The key materials used are quality woods, metal, stone and glass. This are composed using the same geometric systems that were so successful on the exterior. The interior is as fresh and bright as the outside areas. Movement between inside and outside is made easy and natural so that one area becomes just an extension of the other. For example one patio is complete with sofa chairs and a fireplace.
This is contemporary coastal home is full of warmth and vitality. Although it is distinctly artistic and also very elegant it is not at all remote in character. How could it be? After all it is a house built out of dreams.
