Like a glittering gem in a Canadian forest ‘Hill-Maheux Cottage’ is resplendent in rich red.

This highly unusual vacation hideaway was constructed using a contemporary modular house design.  Despite its diminutive scale, the project is massive on design impact.  It must be said that the style of this contemporary retreat bears no resemblance to the traditional concept of a country ‘cottage’. It is sophisticated sleek and highly practical. Colour and form are used creatively to make an artistic statement as well as to satisfy the lifestyle needs of the occupants.

The red outer skin of the modular house design ensures the cottage makes a bold and highly visible architectural statement. Yet conversely this home is intended to provide a sanctuary away from the pressures and pace of modern life.  The family desire total privacy and tranquility from their haven in the woods. The red outer walls of the modular house design provide the desired ‘invisibility’ to the occupants .Visitors to the site may be captivated by the glowing colour and exciting geometric configuration, in the same way they may appreciate a piece of contemporary sculpture. However, the interior remains hidden and the activities of the family are concealed within.

The focus within the home was to provide comfort and a stylish environment from which the family may take full advantage of their time within this secluded setting.  In contrast to the protective red outer skin, massive glass walls are in place to minimize visible barriers between the interior and the fabulous wooded scenery surrounding the house.  This feature is particularly evident in the lounge area where magnificent framed views of the trees dominate.

The composition of the modular house design is bold and uncomplicated.  Two elongated rectilinear modules are interconnected by a curvilinear loft which hovers over the main entrance hall.  This is aesthetically exciting and provides desirable shelter to the vestibule below. Private zones such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and storage areas are housed in one module; and the other ‘pod’ is more open, containing the more public living areas. The elliptical loft space contains a further secluded bedroom space.

A fascinating ‘patchwork’ of metal plates enhances the exterior walls of the cottage. This adds an original personal touch to the modular house design. The panels include printing plates that were a gift from a family friend. Some of the plates are already etched appropriately with landscapes by the original artist. Other panels display engravings made by the couple and their daughter. The remaining untouched plates are intended for future use by the family and friends.  This inventive art project ensures that memories of life in ‘Hill-Maheux Cottage’ are kept as a particularly touching visual journal.
