It’s difficult to determine the source of charm in Alvaro Siza Vieira’s modern architecture. There’s some sort of secret in how a simple rectangular box, be it with a wonderfully proportional window, can cause such a throb. This charm is hidden in the silence of the concise volumes of Siza’s buildings. The precise lightness of shape and the tension of detail, the childishly wise and naive ideas are an accessible way, in which his architecture listens to the reality of life. He creates an architectural poetry, which destroys the silence of the shape and makes it speak.

The way a building is connected to the earth is important for Siza, because he is concerned for the visual stability of what he does, as he himself claims. The openness of the buildings towards the outside world is what gives them their own soul and Siza makes that come to fruition with the help of niches, which open the building through a series of elements of a different scale. The features, which give the buildings their own outlook, are important for Siza. He loves not only the straight lines; the zigzag is a specific characteristic, which makes his projects interesting, gives them an identity.

According to the architect, a building must create conditions for freedom, stimulating people to use the space in unpredictable and alternative ways. The minimalistic approach to the architectural decisions gives an excellent opportunity to do that. The ideas of Siza Vieira are incrusted in his modern architecture buildings. The step-patterned residence of Casa Tolo in Portugal is a unique realization of a home, which fits in perfectly in nature as a natural part of it. Both the interior and exterior fit in well with the topography of the crest where the house is built, and prove that the home and the way of one’s life are a part of the natural world and this truth should and ought to be followed up on in the architecture.
Modern Architecture House by Alvaro Siza Vieira
The sensitivity towards detail and the fresh look at modernism establish another notable creation of modern architecture – the museum of modern art in South Korea – an unusual creation, whose image flabbergasts and contradicts with its various shapes, which make it individual. The minimalistic approach places the accent on the right place – onto the exhibits. The art of Siza Vieira is another proof that truth lies in the concise shapes.
